OUTLINE: The
Galápagos Islands - the Enchanted Isles - are perhaps the
only great natural paradise remaining in the world in a near
pristine condition. Several species are endemic to the islands,
found there and nowhere else on earth. Many others are globally
rare, but because of their isolation from the mainland they are
unafraid of humans and more approachable than anywhere else. This
combination of fearless wildlife and a dramatic volcanic landscape
offers incredible photographic opportunities such as Giant
Tortoises, Sea Turtles, Land and Marine Iguanas, Lava Lizards,
Geckos, Sea Lions, Fur Seals, Blue and Red-footed and Masked
Boobies, Waved Albatrosses, Frigate birds, Penguins, Flamingos, Lava
Herons, the Flightless Cormorant, Lava Gull, Swallow Tail Gull,
Hawks, Red-billed Tropicbirds, Mockingbirds, Darwin Finches and many
more species that are easy to photograph. Also included in the
itinerary is the Cloud Forest, one of the most bio-diverse regions
in the world. This is the photo trip of a lifetime, and also
included is Quito and the Cloud Forest etcetera. Get incredibly
close to some of the planet's rarest species of wildlife.
OVERSEAS TRAVEL
<> It is recommended, but not imperative, that you arrive a day early to be fresh and on time for the trip!
<> Early arrival also enables you to explore the gateway city should you wish.
<> A late flight arrival on day 1 of the trip might entail you having to find your own way to the first hotel, if not close to the airport.
<> Please note that the ending date of the trip is the day of your departure flight. Please arrange your flights accordingly.
Clients from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia should depart their home country a day or two prior to Day 1, so that the commencement of this photography tour isn't missed.
DAY 1
| To QUITO
We'll meet your late flight into
Quito, and get you quickly settled into our accommodations. Quito is
9,300' above sea level, and a good nights sleep will help get you
acclimatized.
QUITO, 2 nights DAY
2 | QUITO region
Breakfast at our Quito hotel, then a central Quito
'photo-stroll-about' taking in the photogenic plazas of this old
colonial town which was declared a World Heritage site in the 1970’s due to it's beautiful architecture. At midday we will head to the
Equator
Monument west of Quito where we'll toy with the angles and symmetry
created by various statues. Free time in the afternoon, and late
light photography to round of our first full day.
Also colorful Indian markets
in the Andean region around Quito. The market bustle, landscape and
colorful
peoples of the Andean region make for excellent photography.
DAYS
3 + 4 | CLOUD FOREST
Pre breakfast photography, breakfast, then off to the cloud forest of Mindo. The journey will take
us across the Andean mountains west of Quito and down into
tropical vegetation at 5000'. We will make frequent stops in the
journey for photographs and roadside birding. Box lunches will
give us greater photography flexibility. Arrive at the lodge early
afternoon. Relax, then late afternoon humming bird show at the
feeders around the lodge.
Early morning birding with long lenses on day 12 followed by
breakfast. Excursions throughout the day around the Bellavista lodge which is situated in the canopy of the cloud forest
and an excellent spot for bird photography.
MINDO, 2 nights
DAY
5
| Back to QUITO
More first-light bird compositions near Bellavista, then back to Quito
via the Andean mountain range with photography stops along the way. Free
time following lunch, and evening light photography following
dinner.
QUITO, 1 night
DAYS
6 to 12 | GALÁPAGOS
ISLANDS
The Galápagos Islands lie 600 miles west of the Ecuador coast, and
we'll depart in the morning to arrive at Baltra around noon. The
next seven days will be spent cruising between the islands of the
Galápagos Archipelago photographing at the following places . . .
Black Turtle Cove:
Mangrove swamps and green Sea Turtles.
Plazas:
Land and Marine Iguanas and Sea Lions - best place in the whole
Archipelago for Land Iguanas.
Santa Fe:
Galápagos Finches, Land Iguanas endemic to Santa Fe and Sea Lions
Española:
Waved Albatross, Blue-footed Boobies, Masked Boobies, Swallow-tailed
Gulls, Lizards, Marine Iguanas, and Sea Lions.
Floreana:
Greater Flamingos and shore birds.
Santa Cruz:
Giant Tortoises, Darwin Finches and Marine Iguanas.
Rabida and Chinese Hat:

Swallow-tail Gull and Lava Gull
Seymour:
Magnificent Frigate birds, Blue-footed Boobies and Sea Lions.
We'll photograph on the islands morning and evening, and move from
island to island during darkness and/or around midday.
Some islands are 'wet' landings, and others dry. Our pre-trip
information, and assistance during the trip will help you stay as
dry and comfortable as possible.
As there will be a decent amount of free time while on the boat,
we'll devote some time to reviewing client's work, and offer up
suggestions in regard to improving composition and exposure
etcetera. We do of course give out advice while in the field too!
For those interested, we'll also give out Adobe PhotoShop tips which
can also be applied to whatever software you use to fix your images.
If you'd like to snorkel - a waterproof camera or a protective
camera housing recommended - you'll be able get closer to
water-bound creatures than you'd ever think possible. Birds in
flight, ocean sunrises and sunsets plus much more.
