PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR OVERVIEW: Tucked away in the northeast corner of Canada is the maritime province of Nova Scotia . . . the ‘new Scotland’ as it were. In one sense time has stood still here, which obviously lends itself to intriguing photography. It’s a land of one quaint fishing harbor after another, plus photo diversions such as the French Fort Louisbourg, the Scottish folk village of Iona, and a step back in Canadian time at the village of Sherbrooke. Lighthouses dot the coast of which Peggy’s Cove lighthouse is the most photographed. This photo tour will also include the coastal spectacle of the Cape Breton Highlands, plus a Whale watching/photographing trip. Add to that Bald Eagles diving for fish, and many other species of seabird including Cormorant, Gannet, Puffin and Kittiwake. Europeans sailing west over the centuries fought hard over this distinct province in eastern Canada, but today all is harmony and the photography outstanding.
INCREASING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS: There isn’t a straightforward way to describe everything you will learn on one of our photography tours in just a few words, but I'll give it a try . . . I instruct, encourage, nurture, coach, nudge, help and guide clients etcetera, all day and every day. This includes one-on-ones and 'collective instruction', i.e. advice given to the whole group at each photo stop. Subjects and techniques discussed and demonstrated are composition strength, shutter speeds, exposure compensation, how aperture choice influences depth of field, lens choice, filter use, long exposure effects, deliberate blur, macro and so on. I also encourage you to 'see' an image when the opportunity presents itself, i.e. to be on the lookout for those less obvious shots that are no less stunning. Lastly, I conduct image critiques both on location - digital camera screens are ideal for this - and via the use of laptops. PhotoShop sessions are also included as time permits. TRAVEL TO THE GATEWAY AIRPORT
o It is recommended that clients arrive a day early to be fresh for the trip, and to also counteract possible flight delays.
o Early arrival also enables you to explore the gateway city should you wish to do so.
o When booking flights, add a day for overnight travel or two days if also crossing the Pacific Ocean/International Dateline.
o The last day of the trip is the date you should arrange your flight home unless you plan to stay on. Thank you!
DAY 1 | HALIFAX to SHERBROOKE
Arrive Halifax, Nova Scotia and following lunch we'll head to Halifax for a visit to the historic Citadel that overlooks the city. The fort was established by the British in 1856, and the pictures here will include close-ups of Scottish regaled guards. We shall then follow the coast northeastwards towards Sherbrooke. We'll make detours to Little Harbor and similar spots as we go, and onto our first night stay in historic Sherbrooke.
SHERBROOKE, 1 night
DAY 2 | SHERBROOKE to CAPE BRETON ISLAND
Sunrise at Wine Harbor this morning, and following breakfast we’ll take an hour or two to explore the historic village of Sherbrooke. Stepping back in time with camera in hand, you’ll find plenty of costumed docents on the streets early, and a potpourri of still life images waiting to be discovered. On to Cape Breton Island via the Canso Causeway, the deepest causeway on the planet. Dependent upon time, we’ll have the option of making our way to Baddeck via the Mabou region.
BADDECK, 3 nights
DAYS 3 and 4 | BALD EAGLES, BIRD ISLANDS, and historic folk villages
On days 3 and 4 we’ll make sunrise runs, and a trip to Bird Islands which will include diving Bald Eagles and Gray Seals. Our daytime excursions in pursuit of quality photography will take us to the historic folk villages of Iona [Scottish] and Fort Louisbourg [French] plus much more besides. We’ll also be photographing the late light on the Bras D’or lakes during our time in the area.
DAY 5 | WHALES and CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS
Another sunrise option on this morn, followed by breakfast and our departure northwards in the direction of Bay St. Lawrence. As we go our highlights will include scenes around North Bay Ingonish, Neil’s Harbor and more. The small fishing community of Bay St. Lawrence will be our first jumping off point to see large marine mammals out in the body of water known as Bay St. Lawrence. Species often visible at this time of year include Minke, Pilot and Fin Whales, plus Porpoise and Dolphin.
CAPE NORTH, 1 night
DAY 6 | CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS to PICTOU
Sunrise overlooking Bay St. Lawrence this morning, and then southwards via Beulach Ban Falls into Cape Breton Highlands National Park. As we go we’ll be on the lookout for Moose that lope around the higher elevations through which we’ll pass. The highway that winds it’s way along the coastline at Cap Rouge [Red Cape] has been well photographed, and it’ll be your turn today. On via photo stops in the French Acadian community of Cheticamp, Margaree Harbour, and Mabou harbour before returning to the mainland. On to Pictou for the night where the Scots originally landed in 1773 to create this 'new Scotland'.
PICTOU, 1 night
DAYS 7 + 8 | PICTOU to PEGGY’S COVE
Following early light with Prince Edward island in distant view, we'll shoot vistas from nearby Green Hill and shoot Cormorants drying their wings on pilings in Pictou harbour. We’ll then take the ‘high road’ via Truro and on to our hotel near Halifax for early check-in. After a short break we'll head out to Peggy’s Cove for the picturesque harbor and photogenic lighthouse at last light.
On day 8 we'll be back at Peggy's Cove for sunrise, and spend the day exploring the tiny fishing communities of Prospect, Indian Point, Mahone Bay, Lunenberg, and one of my favorites, the Blue Rocks area.

DAY 9 | Flights home

INCLUDED IN THE TRIP COST: The following items are included in the trip cost: photography instruction throughout the trip by John; all accommodations with private facilities [ensuite]; all breakfasts; lunch on day one of the trip; dinner on the last night of the trip; on-vehicle snacks and bottled water; all ground transportation; airport transfers on the first and last days of the trip only; entrance fees for sites and activities listed below under ‘Admissions’; and following the trip, field notes describing the time, place and subject of each photo stop, and a disc containing images of clients 'in action' on the trip.
NOT INCLUDED IN THE TRIP COST: The costs for these items are the responsibility of each participant: airfare; travel costs between your home and the gateway airport and return; any transportation or travel costs incurred prior to or after the tour’s inclusive dates; pre-tour and/or post-tour accommodation; lunches and dinners except for lunch on day one of the trip, and dinner on the last night of the trip; alcoholic beverages; entrance fees or costs related to optional sites or activities not included in the itinerary or a part of the trip; excess baggage charges; medical costs; personal items; incidental charges incurred at our accommodations such as internet access, phone calls or laundry; baggage and/or travel insurance; passport or visa expenses; and airport departure taxes.
