Newspaper review of a previous Pacific Northwest trip

OUTLINE:  Columbia Gorge, Mount Hood, Oregon Coast, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, plus abundant wildflowers and wildlife.

From a photographic point of view, this Pacific Northwest itinerary is probably one of our most diverse and spectacular. From crashing surf to wildlife, snow capped peaks to cascading waterfalls, and wildflowers to the catastrophic devastation of a violent volcanic eruption. There is much more besides, so bring extra film if you join me on this one.

OVERSEAS TRAVEL
<> It is recommended, but not imperative, that you arrive a day early to be fresh and on time for the trip!
<> Early arrival also enables you to explore the gateway city should you wish.
<> A late flight arrival on day 1 of the trip might entail you having to find your own way to the first hotel, if not close to the airport.
<> Please note that the ending date of the trip is the day of your departure flight. Please arrange your flights accordingly.

Clients from Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and Australasia should depart their home country a day or two prior to Day 1, so that the commencement of this photography tour isn't missed.

DAY 1  |  COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE
Midday arrivals into Portland Airport are required to get in our shooting along Columbia Gorge, which will include several very different waterfalls, and wind surfers riding the Columbia breezes.  Last shot of the day will be the late light on Mt. Hood . . . a classic side-lit image of the mountain.
HOOD RIVER, 1 night

DAYS 2, 3 and 4  |  OREGON COAST
Sunrise on Mt. Hood from the same spot where we finished off the previous night, then following breakfast we’ll go northwards to remote Lost Lake.  Another classic of Mt. Hood is to be found at the lake that is Oregon’s highest peak at 11,239’.  More Mt. Hood stuff as we traverse Lolo Pass going south, and then we’ll turn west for the coast.  Going via Portland, the Rose and Japanese Gardens are always worth a visit then on through green deciduous forests to the Oregon coast. Late light on Cannon Beach tonight.
On days 3 and 4 we’ll make local and distant coastal trips to such photogenic spots as Ecola State Park with it’s old growth forest, Cape Kiwanda, Cape Meares and several other spots in between. We’ll also take our time over macro shots among the rocks and tide-pools. Late light at Cannon Beach is among the best with Haystack Rock, The Needles and silhouetted bird-life etcetera as the subjects.
CANNON BEACH,  3 nights

DAYS 5 and 6  |  MOUNT RAINIER
We’ll make one last early morning excursion to Ecola State Park for vistas of the sea-stacks to the south, then north to Astoria and shots of the bridge spanning the mouth of the Columbia River. The bridge is the longest, continuous-truss bridge in the world at 1,232 feet long.  We’ll then follow the river eastwards stopping for the occasional vista.  On north then east to make our first visit to Mt. St. Helens from the west side. We’ll view the excellent visitor center multi-media about the tumultuous 1980 event and compose images of the devastation before continuing north to Mt. Rainier for two nights.  Late light on the mountain is scheduled.
On day 6 a dawn trek above the lodge is a must. The Skyline Trail will yield many a wild flower and Black Tail Deer, plus exquisite landscapes. There’ll be more as we explore the mountain during the remainder of the day from the van with a visit to the east side planned.  Mt. Rainier is Washington's highest peak at 14,410'.
MT. RAINIER, 2 nights

DAY 7  |  MOUNT ST. HELENS
Our dawn shot will be the mountain from Reflection Lake, and after returning to the lodge for breakfast we’ll go south toward Mount St. Helens. We’ll shoot as we go, and following supper, we’ll be high on windy Ridge for the late on the mountain. Windy Ridge is a great place to be in respect of the undisturbed devastation and proximity to the peak.
RANDLE, 1 night

DAY 8  |  MOUNT ST. HELENS
Early light at Mount St. Helens then more photography around the mountain as we move south toward Portland. The afternoon will give us the option of returning to the Columbia Gorge if the light wasn’t favorable on day one, but whatever happens we’ll be recording quality images wherever we go.  Supper in Portland tonight.
PORTLAND, 1 night

DAY 9  |  Flights home
Morning flights home from Portland this morning
