PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR OVERVIEW: The red rock of Canyonlands and Arches National Parks, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, and Antelope Canyon. This itinerary combines the best red rock photography of eastern Utah, and northern Arizona. It includes stunning formations such as towering monoliths, canyons, spectacular overviews and more. This is some of the best southwestern photography the USA has to offer and at an ideal time in America's Red Rock Country.
INCREASING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS: There isn’t a straightforward way to describe everything you will learn on one of our photography tours in just a few words, but I'll give it a try . . . I instruct, encourage, nurture, coach, nudge, help and guide clients etcetera, all day and every day. This includes one-on-ones and 'collective instruction', i.e. advice given to the whole group at each photo stop. Subjects and techniques discussed and demonstrated are composition strength, shutter speeds, exposure compensation, how aperture choice influences depth of field, lens choice, filter use, long exposure effects, deliberate blur, macro and so on. I also encourage you to 'see' an image when the opportunity presents itself, i.e. to be on the lookout for those less obvious shots that are no less stunning. Lastly, I conduct image critiques both on location - digital camera screens are ideal for this - and via the use of laptops. PhotoShop sessions are also included as time permits. For more details regarding what you'll learn go here.
TRAVEL TO THE GATEWAY AIRPORT
o It is recommended that clients arrive a day early to be fresh for the trip, and to also counteract possible flight delays.
o Early arrival also enables you to explore the gateway city should you wish to do so.
o When booking flights, add a day for overnight travel or two days if also crossing the Pacific Ocean/International Dateline.
o The last day of the trip is the date you should arrange your flight home unless you plan to stay on. Thank you!
DAYS 1, 2 + 3 | CANYONLANDS and ARCHES National Parks
I'll meet your midday flight into Grand Junction, Colorado, and following lunch and a 'digital orientation' we'll head for Moab via the Colorado National Monument. We'll then shoot along the Colorado River and detour into Castle Valley for 'Monument Valleyesque' mesas. Onto Moab for a late light visit to Arches National Park if time permits.
At dawn on Day 2 we'll be in Arches National Park, then for two days we’ll photo-explore the highlights of both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Early and late light is essential, and the short hike for the last light on Delicate Arch will be most worthwhile. Dawn at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands is also outstanding and you'll shoot the classic sunrise image there too.
MOAB, 3 nights
DAYS 4 + 5 | MONUMENT VALLEY
We’ll ‘mop-up’ around Moab photographically speaking this morning, and then depart toward Monument Valley. On south via Wilson Arch, the petroglyphs of Newspaper Rock, and ancient Hovenweep National Monument where Pueblo tribes once dwelt. We'll detour for the 'Goosenecks' of San Juan State Park, and shoot the classic highway and Monument Valley scene as the light fades.
On Day 5 our photography will commence at dawn with the classic Mittens view. For the remainder of the day you will be guided around Monument Valley by a local Navajo and myself, and record many classic scenes taking our time get the very best from each situation.
Near MONUMENT VALLEY, 2 nights
DAYS 6 + 7 | CANYON de CHELLY
We'll be at the Mittens once more as they are touched by the first light, then following breakfast we'll make our way to Canyon de Chelly via various photography stops, and arrive in time for the evening light on Spider Rock.
On day 6 a local Indian guide will take us through the bottom of Canyon de Chelly. The air will be a little cooler down there, and we'll make multiple stops for images including the White House ruins, Spider Rock and much, much more.
Near CANYON de CHELLY, 2 nights
DAYS 8 + 9 | ANTELOPE CANYON and LAKE POWELL
Dawn shooting back at the Canyon de Chelly rim one more time before departing for Page. We'll cross Indian lands pausing for the best rock formations, and after a break at our hotel we'll head for the late light on Lake Powell, and Lone Rock.
On Day 9 we'll shoot the classic Horseshoe Bend image at dawn, and around mid-morning we'll take a short 4-wheel-drive to the legendary Antelope Canyon. Once there, and armed with a tripod, you'll enjoy creating some classic ‘rippling rock’ compositions. Throughout our time in the colorful canyon the light and soft shadows will caress the walls and create ever-changing photo challenges. Wahweap Bay on Lake Powell will be our spot for the late light.
PAGE, 2 nights
DAY 10 | Flights Home
Departing flights can be arranged for any time this morning. Free transport is available to the next scheduled photography tour. See Bryce and Zion.
