OUTLINE: Big
Bend National Park is desert, Rio Grande canyon and river,
Chisos mountain range, mammal, bird and flora. Also included
are San Antonio side-bars such as the Riverwalk and famed
Alamo. Starting and finishing our Texas sojourn in San
Antonio, you will find that Big Bend National Park offers
plenty for the photographer. This is peak wild flower and
bird visibility time in the park, and you'll be kept busy
with the contrasting fusion's of mountain, river, desert and
colorful cacti. Big Bend is the least visited of America’s
national parks due it's remote location, and is one of the
last remaining wild corners of the United States with
unmatched sights, and a peaceful solitude. Native American
folklore records that, "After making Earth, the Creator
simply 'dumped' all the remaining rock at Big Bend". That
all sounds photogenic, but photograph the place for yourself
in the slanting March light.
OVERSEAS TRAVEL
<> It is recommended, but not imperative, that you arrive a day early to be fresh and on time for the trip!
<> Early arrival also enables you to explore the gateway city should you wish.
<> A late flight arrival on day 1 of the trip might entail you having to find your own way to the first hotel, if not close to the airport.
<> Please note that the ending date of the trip is the day of your departure flight. Please arrange your flights accordingly.
Clients from Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and Australasia should depart their home country a day or two prior to Day 1, so that the commencement of this photography tour isn't missed.
DAY 1 | To
TEXAS
Mid
afternoon arrivals into San Antonio will be ideal for our
hotel rendezvous, and dinner plus evening photography
considerations. The Alamo, a symbol of Texan pride, was
established in 1718 and fell in 1836. We'll schedule our
photography visit with consideration for warm-light pictures,
and dinner on San Antonio's Riverwalk. Of course, the
Riverwalk is photogenic in it's own right!
SAN ANTONIO, 1
Night
DAY
2 | To BIG
BEND National Park
Dawn at the Alamo if a poignant silhouette is of interest to
you, then following breakfast we'll go west throughout the
day. Bandera is the 'Cowboy capital of the world',
and the surrounding countryside is usually dotted with 'outbreaks'
of Bluebonnets and other wild flowers, and
be worthy of several stops. Via Uvalde and Del Rio - Mexico
now just a big stones throw away - to the Amistad Reservoir,
and a few 'water-scapes' there before continuing on via
Marathon to Big Bend National Park in time for the late
light.
STUDY BUTTE, 5
nights
DAYS 3, 4, 5, and 6
| BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
We'll have four whole days and a 'pinch' of day 7 to explore
this compact, but 'rich' terrain. Loop trips each day will
see us photographing at many, many points around the park
including the Chisos Mountains; Ernst Tinaja; the Rio
Grande; the Grapevine Hills; Santa Elena canyon etcetera.
Both from our van and from simple trails we shall be on the
look-out for Coyote, Jackrabbit, Roadrunner and Golden
Eagle, plus flora including Rainbow, Pricklypear, Claretcup,
Button and Strawberry Pitaya Cacti etcetera. Throw in the
early and late light excursions and you will return home
with many memorable images. DAY
7 | To SAN ANTONIO
We shall finish our 'photo business' in Big Bend National Park
this morning, and then return eastwards shooting wildflowers
and serendipitous subjects as we go. There will be ample
stops as always, and we shall return
to San Antonio in time for another supper on the San Antonio
river's Riverwalk, plus the warm light on the west-facing
Alamo to close our trip.
SAN ANTONIO, 1 Night
DAY
8 | Flights
