PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR OVERVIEW: A photo tour that will include Vermont classic images such as the Jenne Farm, the Woodstock region, Peacham, 'the Barnets', the Stowe region, the Northeast Kingdom, covered bridges, barns, waterfalls, and macro shots of the brilliant red, orange and yellow Maple leaves. This New England region is photogenic during most of the year, but when autumn brings with it brilliant and fiery colors, and hopefully a touch of morning fog, you ought to be there with your camera. In addition to our 'foliage foray' will be studies of covered bridges, classic farm scenes, macro leaf shots and all that comes naturally with this rustic, historic, lush, golden and pleasant rolling land. Our trip takes in what I consider as the 'essentials' of Vermont plus much more besides.
FALL COLOR NOTES: It's not possible to be at all the prime spots during their peak color, but we have timed our trip for the best possible combination. Those we 'miss' will still yield striking images, as either the first color contrasts against greens, or the last color is subtle set against the grays and browns.
INCREASING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS: There isn’t a straightforward way to describe everything you will learn on one of our photography tours in just a few words, but I'll give it a try . . . I instruct, encourage, nurture, coach, nudge, help and guide clients etcetera, all day and every day. This includes one-on-ones and 'collective instruction', i.e. advice given to the whole group at each photo stop. Subjects and techniques discussed and demonstrated are composition strength, shutter speeds, exposure compensation, how aperture choice influences depth of field, lens choice, filter use, long exposure effects, deliberate blur, macro and so on. I also encourage you to 'see' an image when the opportunity presents itself, i.e. to be on the lookout for those less obvious shots that are no less stunning. Lastly, I conduct image critiques both on location - digital camera screens are ideal for this - and via the use of laptops. PhotoShop sessions are also included as time permits. For more details regarding what you'll learn go here.
TRAVEL TO THE GATEWAY AIRPORT
o It is recommended that clients arrive a day early to be fresh for the trip, and to also counteract possible flight delays.
o Early arrival also enables you to explore the gateway city should you wish to do so.
o When booking flights, add a day for overnight travel or two days if also crossing the Pacific Ocean/International Dateline.
o The last day of the trip is the date you should arrange your flight home unless you plan to stay on. Thank you!
DAY 1 | To VERMONT
It is recommended that participants arrive a day early for our Vermont photography tour so as to maximize the photo opportunities on day one. We'll depart Burlington mid-morning and fast track eastwards to Waterbury from where we can slow down and spend the rest of the day shooting fall scenes, villages and waterfalls. Oh, covered bridges including Pine Brook, Waitsfield village, and the Warren bridge. On south for two waterfalls, namely Moss Glen and Texas falls, but not before we've shot the tumbling water on the Mad River. Tripods and long exposures are recommended for each of these spots. Moose frequent the area around Granville which sits between the two waterfalls. We'll than detour for the Liberty Hill farm shot, take dinner, and on to our hotel shooting the late light as we go.
Near KILLINGTON, 2 nights
DAY 2 | The WOODSTOCK region
We’ll start at sunrise down at the New England autumn classic, Jenne Farm . . . probably the most photographed farm in the United States. While based in Woodstock we'll explore a chunk of the Green Mountains where'll you'll shoot a remote waterfall, colored leaves and fungi. We'll also point our cameras at New England classics including the Quechee Gorge, and Sleepy Hollow Farm, Woodstock village and covered bridges etcetera. As we go we’ll take time to compose small vignettes of New England life, along with details in macro wherever they may lie.
DAYS 3, 4 and 5 | Loop trips: PEACHAM and the NORTHEAST KINGDOM
Following more sunrise photography and breakfast on Day 3, we’ll head north to Barre via more autumn scenics including farms and covered bridges near Tunbridge; Chelsea; and the Washington rooftops with a backdrop of mountainside color. On via Barre which is considered to be the 'granite capital of the world'. Fine examples can be seen around the region and at Hope cemetery.
Days 4 and 5 will see taking loop trips around the regions of East Orange to Peacham, and a section of the Northeast Kingdom. One loop will include ponds with colored reflections, leaf macros, colorful hillsides, and the villages of East Orange, Waits River, East Topsham, and Peacham. This day will conclude at Hillside Acres Farm. The second loop takes us northeastwards via Danville, Lyndon, East and West Burke, and across to the Craftsbury Common region. You can also expect that several covered bridges to be included.
Near MONTPELIER, 3 nights
DAY 6 | To BURLINGTON via STOWE
We'll make another early start for first light photography at Berlin Pond, then following breakfast we'll head to Hope Cemetery to photograph the unique granite designs. North to the Coburn Covered bridge, and on north via a farm market for pumpkin symmetry and more. A stop at Curtis Pond is forever colorful, then we go north to circle Mount Worcester, and descend southwards to the Stowe region. We'll shoot a classic church and colorful hillside one last time, and then on up to the Von Trapp family lodge - 'Sound of Music' and all - which affords spectacular views of the Worcester Mountain range to the east. On to Burlington for our last night, and a slide show during dinner of the images John has taken of the group during the trip.
SOUTH BURLINGTON, 1 night
