BRYCE and ZION NATIONAL PARKS |
Bryce Canyon, Utah. It's about the light, which renders the center formation as a Greek temple. |
Also in Bryce, this is one of my favorites that makes good use of the light and 'thirds'. |
Moving on to Zion national park, is it a bird or a plane? Is it a fly or a Bee? Actually it's proper name is Bee-like Tachinid Fly and is listed under the Bee section in the Audubon directory. This one is feeding off some Rabbit Brush.
These leaves were in a dried up stream bed that was full of water just three days previously. I had just renewed my artistic license which gave me the authority to move the leaves around a little. On the next photo tour in 2011 this was all sand, and consequently there was no image. The moral of the story is, when you see the opportunity, take it. All puns intended. ;-)
A simple shot of light on the Zion canyon walls, but with a carefully chosen foreground. |
A tripod and a long exposure - at least a shutter speed of a 15th of a second or slower - will yield some very striking images. Choose your camera position carefully so that you can capture the light that may be reflecting off the water, which in this case was light bouncing off the Zion canyon walls. |

EUROPEAN ALPS |
I found it difficult to pick just one or two images from the recent European Alps trip for this feature, so have decided to share several with you. The shot above is looking down on Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland from just below the village of Wengen. It's truly spectacular, but especially so when a clearing storm leaves behind a series of clouds caught kissing the steep slopes.
A Mountain Goat opposite the Matterhorn looks for food and a way down to it.
A wonderful smile from an elderly lady in a remote village near Vals in Switzerland. It wasn't posed, she was just being herself.
An Alpine Red Fox is on alert on the Furka Pass, again in Switzerland.
A 'postcard' shot of some magnitude on my European Alps photography tours! It's St. Magdalena in the Italian Dolomites. To get aboard the nest Alps trip, go here for the photography tour and workshop calendar.
The Lauterbrunnen valley again with Grosshorn peak dominant. I think I should tell you that this is the view from our hotel.
The iconic Matterhorn towering over Zermatt. For details of future European Alps photo tours, go here.
A shot that can be found on most of my trips, but one has to 'see' the image first. Taken on a European Alps photo tour it's a style of image I refer to as a 'still life on the run'. I knew when taking it that I was going to go for this 'letterbox' style crop too. Go here for info regarding the next Alps trip.
Whenever it rains on Travel Images photo tours I suggest to groups that they try shooting through the van windows for some very pleasing and unusual effects. My recommended technique is to use a long lens and focus manually between the window and subject for very abstract results, or on the subject such as above. A half stop over exposure provides the bright 'high key' feel. The image is from a European Alps photo tour, and details of future trips can be found here.
Rural simplicity and magnificence near Barwies, Austria, on the recent European Alps photo tour.
This is the German Alps near Berchtesgaden. The mountain at left is the Watzmann massif, with Maria Gern church at right. I flopped this image for the simple reason that we read from left to right in the western hemisphere, and when viewing images the eye naturally drifts in the same direction. Weird uh?! For details of the next European Alps photography tour go here.
Another European Alps image indicative of the wonderful serendipitous moments that travel can bring. of course, ya' gotta be there, be ready, and compose and shoot like lightning sometimes!
St. Bartholomew, Konigsee, Germany, an early stop on the European Alps photography tour. Peruse the photo tour and workshop calendar here.
An image I would describe as 'Still Life on the Run', and one day I'll post a series of these images in the photo galleries section. Taken on a previous European Alps trip the formula is to simply 'see' the image, get close for impact, and then get square to the subject so that it's sharp from edge to edge.
ENGLAND, UK |
A shot from the England photography tour just ended. I find it to be quite charming but lacking a caption such as "Are we there yet Mum?" The details of the next England photo tour can be found here. |
At the opposite end of England to Stonehenge is the Castlerigg Stone Circle in the Lake District. We'll be here at dawn and dusk on the England photography tour which runs in late May and early June. Find all the details here. |
Not that there is much of it showing in this image, but this is the oldest original cobbled street in England. The place is Vicar's Close, Wells, Somerset, and the building at top right is Wells Cathedral. For details regarding the next England photography tour go here.
A 'Still Life On The Run' image from the current England tour, which is nothing but chains laid out in a Cornwall harbour! Information regarding my England tours are here.
Coming up in late May is the England photography workshop and tour, England being the country of my birth. This is Stonehenge of course, but the thing about this shot is that it was taken inside the stone circle, something that only a fraction of one percent get to do. Join my England photo tour group this year, and at dawn on May 24th you'll be taking your own images among these ancient stones. For more Stonehenge and England images from previous photo workshops go here. |
If you've been to Stonehenge you'll know that there is just 9 to 5 access, but join one of my England trips and you'll be photographing among the stones at either sunset or dawn.
A scene in the English Lake District, and an annual part of my England photography tours and workshops. For details of my next England tour go here.

RED ROCK COUNTRY, ARIZONA and UTAH, USA |
| Two images from the annual Red Rock Country photography tours. At right, Mesa Arch at sunrise in Canyonlands National Park complemented by the 'Washerwoman group' in the distance, which gives the shot some perspective.
Then below, Turret Arch shot through North Window in Arches National Park. This one is a series of three verticals that I stitched together. |
For details of the next Red Rock Country photo tour check out the calendar here.
A slot canyon image from a Red Rock photography tour that our clients can easily achieve in Arizona's Antelope Canyon. More images from this trip are here. By the way, you're looking at a close-up of water-created swirls in the rock.
From the current Red Rock Country tour. In the Windows section of Arches National Park, the colors are actually this saturated at late or early light. Information regarding autumn and winter Red Rock trips can be found here.
Monument Valley from the up and coming Red Rock Country photography tour in October. A dawn image with a wide angle, and a small aperture for sharpness from foreground to infinity. More trip details are here.
TUSCANY, ITALY |

Think of Tuscany, Italy, and one thinks of images such as this perhaps, except that I tweaked this one in PhotoShop. Then below, the late light on Capella Santa Maria di Vitaleta near San Quirico d'Orcia.
CINQUE TERRE, ITALY |
The 2010 Cinque Terre photo tour was hit by rain towards the end of the trip, but the point I want to make is even though we may not like wet weather, with comes photographic opportunity. This is Vernazza shot at late light and during the rain. Details of the next Cinque Terre photography tour can be found here.
| |
Rain is relatively rare in Cinque Terre, but when it does, it really does rain! That in itself brings about more photo opportunities such as the one below using deliberate blur. If there is no color, there is no image to speak of.
After the storm all is peaceful, and leaves such as this one beg to be noticed. Accordingly, if one sees the image and gets the technicalities lined up correctly, then you have yourself a memorable image. |
PROVENCE, FRANCE |
Next up in Europe, 2010, was Provence, France. This church stands above the town of Castellane, and this shot proves that you can have good light other than early and late on any given day. Taken in mid-afternoon, our group waited on a nearby hillside until we got the light we wanted. It took about 20 minutes. Any Provence photo gallery has to feature Lavender, but this time round a Swallowtail Butterfly accents the purple hues in spectacular fashion. For more Provence photo tour details go here.
Gordes is just one of the many ancient hill towns that dot the French region of Provence. We shoot this scene at both dawn and dusk. Go here for details of the next Provencal photo excursion. |
Think of Lavender, and one thinks of Provence, France. This is the much photographed Sénanque Abbey. Details of the next Provence photo workshop can be found here.
BURGUNDY, FRANCE |
Continuing with our European trips last summer, next came a 'By Request' photography tour of Burgundy in central France. The region's landscape is easy on the eye, and a scene such as this can often be found elsewhere on the planet in July and August. If you like chocolate and the look of Burgundy thus far, then the hilltop town of Flavigny could be the place for you. The chocolate connection comes via the movie 'Chocolat' which was filmed here, but in actual fact the region is noted more for it's licorice.
One night at dinner we decided to set up a signature shot that represented the region, and this was the result. For scheduled photography trips to Burgundy go here. [See 2013]
PARIS, FRANCE |
Next up last summer came Paris, so here is a Parisian pair. This is a night shot of the Louvre - obviously! - with my white balance set on auto. The image is part of a wider photomerge using four stitched frames, but has been cropped to accommodate it on this page. On another evening we were heading for the Arc de Triomphe at twilight when we passed this lady doing her evening chores. Everyone wanted a shot of her, so I approached the lady with a few Euros and she obliged the group for a few minutes. For details of the next trip to Paris go here.

It was icy cold when shooting this at Oxbow Bend in Grand Teton National Park this morning, but well worth any discomfort! Go here for more details of this trip.

VERMONT, USA |
A shot from day 2 of the current Vermont photo workshop. The two Maple leaves are snagged on a rock in a stream, and water is passing over the bottom of the two leaves. As the exposure was a long 4 seconds @ f.11, the water is almost invisible, but softens the detail in the leaf. For details of future Vermont photo tours go here.
Looking down the gravel lane at the Jenne Farm with some great side lighting. I couldn't ask for more.
The Cilley covered bridge near Tunbridge. Bridges were 'covered' purely to preserve the wooden timbers.
A Maple leaf lying on the surface of water. The light was low in the forest and because I hand-held this shot it is not as sharp as I would have liked. The message? Use a tripod in such situations.
Morning fog and colorful symmetry combine to give us this shot of young Maple trees. |
Autumn color of the different variety shot in a cemetery at dawn near Montpelier, Vermont's capital city..jpg) Morning fog near Barre, Vermont. The trick is to be on the edge of the fog! Details of my Vermont trips are to be found here.

The 'unsung' Herbert Lake in Banff NP, Canada looking north. Many folk drive right by this spot as it's so small, but it has a lot to offer both early and late in the day. Go here for details of the next Canadian Rockies photo tour.
A Banff National Park sunrise at little Herbert Lake. Taken on a Canadian Rockies photo tour, future trip details are here.

You can find details of the next Cloud Forest and Galápagos Islands trip in Ecuador here.
